Message summary & scripture references
A question I get a lot is “Are believers required to tithe?” It is a simple question, but this question has caused church splits and furious debates. Some say yes and others say no. In today’s Daily Word, we will walk through the scriptures together with the goal of answering this question. At the end of this message, I will share which side I come down on regarding the question of whether there is a requirement for believers to tithe.
Numbers 18:24 KJV
[24] But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the Lord, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
Numbers 18:21 NIV
[21] “I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.
Genesis 14:18-20 KJV
[18] And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
[19] And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
[20] And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Genesis 28:20-22 KJV
[20] And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
[21] So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God:
[22] And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
Matthew 23:23 KJV
[23] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
1 Corinthians 9:13-14 KJV
[13] Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
[14] Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
Luke 8:3 NLT
[3] Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing from their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples.
Hebrews 7:11-16 NLT
[11] So if the priesthood of Levi, on which the law was based, could have achieved the perfection God intended, why did God need to establish a different priesthood, with a priest in the order of Melchizedek instead of the order of Levi and Aaron?
[12] And if the priesthood is changed, the law must also be changed to permit it.
[13] For the priest we are talking about belongs to a different tribe, whose members have never served at the altar as priests.
[14] What I mean is, our Lord came from the tribe of Judah, and Moses never mentioned priests coming from that tribe.
[15] This change has been made very clear since a different priest, who is like Melchizedek, has appeared.
[16] Jesus became a priest, not by meeting the physical requirement of belonging to the tribe of Levi, but by the power of a life that cannot be destroyed.
Acts 15:28-29 KJV
[28] For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
[29] That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV
[7] Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give ; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
