How come I am not as successful as Cindy truly blessed Jones?

Hey Amos, Cindy Jones is really crushing her calling.

She has 100,000 fans on Facebook, an email list of 10,000 subscribers, and is traveling from state to state speaking at high-profile conferences. Based on her self-released income report, she is making $27,251 per month from her business.

Like Cindy, I am doing what God called me to do, but I bring in very little income, and not many people are following me.

What am I doing differently than Cindy Jones?

Well …

It is less about what you’re doing wrong or different, and more about where we are in our lives.

Cindy is 41 years-old with no kids. Her husband has a high-paying job, and she has been working on her calling since she was 20.

Therefore …

  • She has a great deal of time to work on her business because she doesn’t have little kids running around the house.
  • She doesn’t have the pressure of maintaining a stable income source, so she is free to be creative, and to take risks.
  • Cindy has more than 21 years of experience working on her calling, so she knows exactly whom she is called to serve, and how best to serve them.

You see, Cindy is at a stage in her life where she can focus a great deal of energy on cultivating her business. Conversely, your life perhaps is more like this:

  • You have small children who need your time, attention, and care. You don’t have hours to give your all to your business calling.
  • You may be the primary breadwinner without much, or any, financial backup from a spouse. You could be stressed out just trying to survive and pay bills. Such challenges kill creativity.
  • You just got started with your calling, so you are fuzzy about who your clientele should be, and perhaps are not yet clear about the best way to serve them.

What is my point?

You and Cindy are two different people at two different stages of life, so the comparison isn’t a sound one.

Depending on where you are in your life journey, you need different expectations of success. And that’s OK.

For example, I have a 9 year-old and 5 year-old, and I can tell you that I don’t have the time that I had when I was 25, single, and without kids. I have to do things a little more slowly these days, and there is nothing wrong with that.

I can’t envy Dave Ramsey who has grown kids, and has been working on his calling for more than 20 plus years. We can’t compare our “first act” to someone else who is at the peak of his or her career.

Success happens not because of the time or money we have, but from following God’s specific instructions for our lives, in each of its stages.

Be patient. Don’t compare. Instead, grow based on your circumstances, and your unique calling.
