Message summary & scripture references

God speaks to us mainly through His written word. However, He is also in the business of giving us dreams and/or visions as part of our toolkit for direction for our entrepreneurial calling. A simple distinction I use between them is that dreams happen when you are asleep and visions happen when you are awake. In today’s Daily Word I am providing a few basic principles to interpret dreams and visions. This is by no means a complete study on the topic, but it is a great starting point.

Acts 2:17 KJV

[17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Acts 10:9-17 NLT

[9] The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon,
[10] and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.
[11] He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners.
[12] In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds.
[13] Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.”
[14] “No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.”
[15] But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.”
[16] The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven.
[17] Peter was very perplexed. What could the vision mean? Just then the men sent by Cornelius found Simon’s house. Standing outside the gate,

Acts 10:28-29 NLT

[28] Peter told them, “You know it is against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you. But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.
[29] So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for. Now tell me why you sent for me.”

Genesis 41:17-27 NLT

[17] So Pharaoh told Joseph his dream. “In my dream,” he said, “I was standing on the bank of the Nile River,
[18] and I saw seven fat, healthy cows come up out of the river and begin grazing in the marsh grass.
[19] But then I saw seven sick-looking cows, scrawny and thin, come up after them. I’ve never seen such sorry-looking animals in all the land of Egypt.
[20] These thin, scrawny cows ate the seven fat cows.
[21] But afterward you wouldn’t have known it, for they were still as thin and scrawny as before! Then I woke up.
[22] “In my dream I also saw seven heads of grain, full and beautiful, growing on a single stalk.
[23] Then seven more heads of grain appeared, but these were blighted, shriveled, and withered by the east wind.
[24] And the shriveled heads swallowed the seven healthy heads. I told these dreams to the magicians, but no one could tell me what they mean.”
[25] Joseph responded, “Both of Pharaoh’s dreams mean the same thing. God is telling Pharaoh in advance what he is about to do.
[26] The seven healthy cows and the seven healthy heads of grain both represent seven years of prosperity.
[27] The seven thin, scrawny cows that came up later and the seven thin heads of grain, withered by the east wind, represent seven years of famine.

1 Kings 22:17,19-23 NLT

[17] Then Micaiah told him, “In a vision I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, like sheep without a shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘Their master has been killed. Send them home in peace.'”
[19] Then Micaiah continued, “Listen to what the LORD says! I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the armies of heaven around him, on his right and on his left.
[20] And the LORD said, ‘Who can entice Ahab to go into battle against Ramoth-gilead so he can be killed?’ “There were many suggestions,
[21] and finally a spirit approached the LORD and said, ‘I can do it!’
[22] “‘How will you do this?’ the LORD asked. “And the spirit replied, ‘I will go out and inspire all of Ahab’s prophets to speak lies.’ “‘You will succeed,’ said the LORD. ‘Go ahead and do it.’
[23] “So you see, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all your prophets. For the LORD has pronounced your doom.”

Romans 11:34 NLT

[34] For who can know the LORD’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice?

John 8:44 NLT

[44] For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Numbers 23:19 NLT

[19] God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?
