Discussion summary & scripture references
There are some activities we are currently involved in, traditions that we hold, and relationships we have that we need to let go of so we can succeed in our calling. It doesn’t necessarily mean those activities, traditions and relationships are bad. In fact, they may have provided for us in big ways financially, as well as comforted us in times of distress. However, to move forward in the new arenas God is calling us to step into, it requires us to let go of some things. Listen to this replay from our live Faith-Discussion to learn more about this concept.
Mark 10:17-23 NLT
[17] As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
[18] “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good.
[19] But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.'”
[20] “Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
[21] Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
[22] At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
[23] Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”
Mark 10:24-25 KJV
[24] And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
[25] It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Matthew 4:18-22 KJV
[18] And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
[19] And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
[20] And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
[21] And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
[22] And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
Acts 10:9-17 KJV
[9] On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
[10] And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
[11] And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
[12] Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
[13] And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
[14] But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
[15] And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
[16] This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.
[17] Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate,
Mark 7:13 KJV
[13] Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Acts 7:2-4 NLT
[2] This was Stephen’s reply: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me. Our glorious God appeared to our ancestor Abraham in Mesopotamia before he settled in Haran.
[3] God told him, ‘Leave your native land and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’
[4] So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran until his father died. Then God brought him here to the land where you now live.
Genesis 12:1,4-5 NLT
[1] The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.
[4] So Abram departed as the LORD had instructed, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.
[5] He took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth-his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran-and headed for the land of Canaan. When they arrived in Canaan,
Genesis 13:5-7 NLT
[5] Lot, who was traveling with Abram, had also become very wealthy with flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, and many tents.
[6] But the land could not support both Abram and Lot with all their flocks and herds living so close together.
[7] So disputes broke out between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. (At that time Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land.)
Genesis 13:14-17 NLT
[14] After Lot had gone, the LORD said to Abram, “Look as far as you can see in every direction-north and south, east and west.
[15] I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession.
[16] And I will give you so many descendants that, like the dust of the earth, they cannot be counted!
[17] Go and walk through the land in every direction, for I am giving it to you.”
Matthew 19:27-29 NLT
[27] Then Peter said to him, “We’ve given up everything to follow you. What will we get?”
[28] Jesus replied, “I assure you that when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
[29] And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.
