Summary of question

In today’s message, I am answering a question from one of the members of the Kingdom Driven Entrepreneur community. Their question is “Should I be a lender to my brothers and sisters in Christ?”

Here is a paraphrase of the question …

I understand that debt is not a sin, however being in debt is like being a slave to the lender. The Bible also says we are to be lenders and not borrowers. If debt is so bad, then why shall we lend to others so they can be in debt and therefore be slaves to us? Why not just give and forget and not lend and expect it back from the borrower?

Scripture references for answer

Deuteronomy 28:12 NLT

[12] The LORD will send rain at the proper time from his rich treasury in the heavens and will bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them.

Deuteronomy 23:19-20 NLT

[19] “Do not charge interest on the loans you make to a fellow Israelite, whether you loan money, or food, or anything else.
[20] You may charge interest to foreigners, but you may not charge interest to Israelites, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you do in the land you are about to enter and occupy.

Leviticus 25:35-37 NLT

[35] “If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and cannot support himself, support him as you would a foreigner or a temporary resident and allow him to live with you.
[36] Do not charge interest or make a profit at his expense. Instead, show your fear of God by letting him live with you as your relative.
[37] Remember, do not charge interest on money you lend him or make a profit on food you sell him.

Deuteronomy 15:1-3 NLT

[1] “At the end of every seventh year you must cancel the debts of everyone who owes you money.
[2] This is how it must be done. Everyone must cancel the loans they have made to their fellow Israelites. They must not demand payment from their neighbors or relatives, for the LORD’s time of release has arrived.
[3] This release from debt, however, applies only to your fellow Israelites-not to the foreigners living among you.

Galatians 3:26-29 NLT

[26] For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
[27] And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
[28] There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
[29] And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.
