Message summary & scripture references

On this Good Friday, Jesus died on the cross for our sins, so we could be reconciled back to God as his children. Jesus’ calling was to save us, and He did it well, but to accomplish His calling, He had to “take up His cross.” In like manner, Jesus instructs us to “take up our cross” and follow Him.

However, what does this really mean?

Well, for those of us with entrepreneurial callings, taking up our cross represents going in a different direction than normal society and being considered foolish for following the dream God has given us. It is the complete surrender of our will to achieve the calling God gave us, until we leave this earth through death or rapture.

Hebrews 12:1-3 NLT

[1] Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
[2] We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
[3] Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

Matthew 10:34-38 NLT

[34] “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.
[35] ‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
[36] Your enemies will be right in your own household!’
[37] “If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.
[38] If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.

Matthew 16:24-25 NLT

[24] Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.
[25] If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

Mark 10:21-22 KJV

[21] Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
[22] And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

Luke 9:22-23 KJV

[22] Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
[23] And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
